Getting Started in Poultry Farming: What Every First-Time Farmer Should Know https://afshltd.com/getting-started-in-poultry-farming-what-every-first-time-farmer-should-know/ https://afshltd.com/getting-started-in-poultry-farming-what-every-first-time-farmer-should-know/#respond Fri, 17 Apr 2026 12:50:00 +0000 https://afshltd.com/?p=4339 Poultry farming continues to be one of the most accessible and rewarding agribusiness ventures in Nigeria. With rising demand for chicken meat and eggs, many individuals are exploring poultry farming as a source of income and long-term food security.

However, while poultry farming can be profitable, success depends heavily on proper knowledge, planning, and management from the beginning.

If you are considering starting your poultry journey, here are the key things every first-time farmer should know.

1. Start with a Clear Purpose and Plan

Before buying birds or building a pen, define your goal clearly.
Are you raising broilers for meat production, layers for egg production, or Noiler, which offers a balanced option for both meat and egg production?

Your purpose will guide every decision you make, from housing design to feed selection, budgeting, and expected production timeline. Many beginners struggle simply because they start without a structured plan.

2. Choose the Right Stock from a Reliable Source

The quality of your birds plays a major role in your success. Always source your day-old chicks from a trusted hatchery with strong production standards, proper vaccination protocols, and consistent quality assurance.

At Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery, day-old chicks are produced under strict biosecurity and quality control systems to ensure farmers start with strong, healthy stock.

Healthy chicks should be:

  • Active and alert
  • Free from deformities
  • Well-dried and evenly sized
  • Responsive to movement and sound

Starting with strong, healthy chicks significantly reduces mortality risks and improves overall farm productivity.

3. Understand Housing and Biosecurity

Your poultry house does not need to be expensive, but it must be functional. Focus on:

  • Proper ventilation
  • Dry and clean flooring
  • Protection from rodents and predators

Biosecurity is equally important. Simple practices such as limiting farm visitors, using footbaths, and regular disinfection help prevent disease outbreaks that can wipe out an entire flock.

4. Feeding is the Foundation of Growth

Feed accounts for the largest cost in poultry production, but it is also the most critical driver of performance.

Key points to remember:

  • Use quality feed appropriate for each growth stage
  • Avoid switching feeds randomly
  • Ensure constant access to clean water

Poor feeding practices lead to slow growth, poor egg production, and increased vulnerability to disease.

5. Learn Basic Health Management

Even with good management, poultry birds can face health challenges. As a beginner, you should:

  • Follow vaccination schedules strictly
  • Observe birds daily for unusual behavior
  • Isolate sick birds immediately
  • Consult a veterinary professional when needed

Prevention is always more effective and more affordable than treatment.

6. Expect the Learning Curve

Poultry farming is practical, and experience matters. Your first cycle is often more about learning than profit.

Take time to:

  • Monitor bird behavior daily
  • Track feed consumption and growth rates
  • Learn from challenges
  • Improve with each production cycle

Consistency is what builds long-term success in poultry farming.

7. Start Small, Then Scale

One of the most common mistakes new farmers make is starting too large. It is better to begin with a manageable number of birds, understand the system properly, and then scale gradually.

Sustainable growth in poultry farming is built step by step.

Conclusion

Poultry farming remains one of the most practical pathways into agribusiness, but long-term success is built on the right foundation rather than quick expectations. From proper planning and housing to quality feed, biosecurity, and good health management, every step plays a role in determining farm performance.

For first-time farmers, the focus should be on learning the system, building consistency, and making informed decisions at every stage of production. Starting right often determines how well a poultry business grows over time.

At Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery, the commitment goes beyond providing day-old chicks. It is about supporting farmers with quality inputs and practical knowledge that strengthen productivity and encourage sustainable growth in poultry farming.

How to Maximize Profits in Poultry Farming Despite Rising Feed Costs https://afshltd.com/how-to-maximize-profits-in-poultry-farming-despite-rising-feed-costs/ https://afshltd.com/how-to-maximize-profits-in-poultry-farming-despite-rising-feed-costs/#respond Mon, 16 Feb 2026 10:00:00 +0000 https://afshltd.com/?p=4230 Rising poultry feed costs remain one of the biggest challenges facing farmers in Nigeria today. Since feed can account for up to 70 percent of total production costs, even small price increases can significantly affect margins.

However, profitability in poultry farming is still achievable. With the right feeding strategies, quality birds, efficient farm management, and smart marketing, farmers can reduce waste, improve feed conversion, and maintain healthy returns.

At Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery, we understand the realities farmers face and continue to provide solutions that strengthen productivity across the poultry value chain.

Here are practical ways to maximize profits despite rising feed costs.

1. Optimize Your Poultry Feeding Strategy

Improving how you feed your birds is one of the fastest ways to reduce unnecessary expenses and improve poultry farm profitability.

Use Phase Feeding

Adjust feed formulations to match birds’ nutritional requirements at each growth stage. Chicks, growers, and layers have different needs. Feeding the right ration at the right time improves feed efficiency and reduces waste.

Reduce Feed Wastage

Use properly designed feeders positioned at the correct height. Overfilled feeders and poor placement lead to spillage, increasing overall production costs.

Avoid Overfeeding

More feed does not always mean better performance. Controlled feeding improves feed conversion ratio and protects your margins.

Choose Quality Feed Concentrates

Investing in high-quality feed concentrates from reputable suppliers such as Amo Byng Nigeria Limited helps ensure birds receive balanced nutrition that supports optimal growth and egg production.

2. Use Alternative and Cost-Effective Feed Ingredients

Exploring alternative feed ingredients can help reduce dependency on expensive conventional inputs.

  • Incorporate locally available options like palm kernel meal, cassava peels, and brewer’s dried grains.
  • Consider sustainable protein sources such as black soldier fly larvae (BSFL).
  • Work with an animal nutritionist to maintain the right nutrient balance while lowering feed costs.

Cost reduction should never compromise bird health. A properly balanced diet remains essential for performance.

3. Invest in High-Quality Birds

Feed efficiency begins with genetics. Birds with strong feed conversion ratios require less feed to gain weight or produce eggs.

Sourcing quality day-old chicks or point-of-lay birds from trusted hatcheries like Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery ensures:

  • Strong early growth
  • Better disease resistance
  • Improved feed conversion efficiency

Breeds such as Noilers are particularly valued for their dual-purpose advantage and efficient performance under Nigerian farming conditions.

4. Improve Poultry Farm Management Practices

Efficient management reduces stress and prevents losses that increase feed costs.

  • Maintain proper ventilation and temperature control to prevent heat stress.
  • Enforce strict biosecurity measures to reduce disease outbreaks.
  • Cull unproductive birds early to reduce unnecessary feeding costs.

Strong management practices protect both your birds and your investment.

5. Consider On-Farm Feed Production or Bulk Buying

Producing your own feed or buying in bulk can significantly reduce per-unit costs.

  • Source raw materials in bulk during harvest seasons when prices are lower.
  • Invest in a small feed mill for custom formulations tailored to your flock’s needs.
  • Partner with reliable suppliers for cost-effective bulk purchases.

Strategic procurement can stabilize production costs even when market prices fluctuate.

6. Leverage Smart Poultry Marketing Strategies

Profitability is not just about reducing costs. It is also about increasing revenue.

  • Sell during peak demand periods when prices are higher.
  • Diversify income streams by selling eggs, meat, manure, and live birds.
  • Use social media and branding to connect directly with buyers and reduce reliance on middlemen.

A strong marketing strategy ensures you capture full value for your production.

Build a Profitable Poultry Business Despite Rising Feed Costs

While rising feed costs present real challenges, they also highlight the importance of efficiency, quality inputs, and smart management. Farmers who focus on reducing waste, improving feed conversion, and sourcing high-quality birds are better positioned for long-term profitability.

At Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery, we remain committed to supporting farmers with quality birds and practical solutions that strengthen poultry production across Nigeria.

Dr. Ayoola Oduntan Donates 2,000 Capacity Model Broiler Poultry Pen Complex to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria https://afshltd.com/dr-ayoola-oduntan-donates-2000-capacity-model-broiler-poultry-pen-complex-to-ahmadu-bello-university-zaria/ https://afshltd.com/dr-ayoola-oduntan-donates-2000-capacity-model-broiler-poultry-pen-complex-to-ahmadu-bello-university-zaria/#respond Wed, 21 Jan 2026 13:14:00 +0000 https://afshltd.com/?p=4210

We are excited to share a major milestone that reflects our commitment to education, youth empowerment, and sustainable livestock development in Nigeria.

On January 20, 2026, our Group Managing Director, Dr. Ayoola Oduntan, donated a 2,000 capacity Model Broiler Poultry Pen Complex to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.

The donation was officially unveiled and commissioned as part of the Faculty’s Veterinary Oath Taking and Induction Ceremony, reinforcing our dedication to strengthening practical learning, entrepreneurship, and agricultural innovation in veterinary education.

Dr. Oduntan, an alumnus of ABU’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Class of 1990), described the donation as a personal commitment to give back to the institution that shaped his career. He shared that returning to contribute meaningfully to the university has been a long held goal since graduation, and that the values and discipline he gained at ABU have played a key role in his professional journey.

The newly commissioned facility was designed and constructed by Diversay Solutions Ltd. It is a fully integrated and functional commercial poultry operation, built to provide hands on training and real life entrepreneurial experience for veterinary students.

The complex includes a 2,000 capacity broiler poultry pen, an administrative office for management staff, a borehole to ensure a steady supply of potable water, an initial stock of 2,000 broiler chicks with feed supplied through to market weight, and an offtake arrangement to guarantee purchase of birds at maturity.

Dr. Oduntan explained that the initiative is designed to groom veterinary students into entrepreneurs by exposing them to real world poultry production, business management, and value chain operations while still in school.

“This facility is designed to function as a real commercial operation. Students will not only learn animal health and production, but will also gain a practical understanding of management, accountability, and value creation. My vision is simple: no veterinary graduate of this institution should leave without the capacity to create income, provide solutions, and contribute meaningfully to national development,” he said.

Representing the Vice Chancellor of ABU, the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Professor Raymond Bako, commended Dr. Oduntan for his foresight and sustained commitment to the institution. He described the donation as timely and impactful, noting that the facility will strengthen practical training, research, and entrepreneurship within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. He also encouraged more alumni to support the university’s growth.

Dr. Oduntan also delivered the keynote address at the ceremony titled “The Ingredients of Successful Poultry Startups: The History and Progress of the Noiler Chicken in Nigeria.” He highlighted the transformative impact of the Noiler, a dual purpose breed developed by Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery Ltd, a subsidiary of the Amo Group. He emphasized the role of the Noiler in strengthening food and protein security, improving nutrition in rural communities, and providing sustainable income opportunities for smallholder farmers, especially women and children, across Nigeria and the African continent.

In recognition of his contributions to veterinary education, agribusiness development, and national food security, Dr. Oduntan was presented with an Award of Excellence by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

The commissioning ceremony was organised by the Alumni Committee of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and attended by university management, faculty members, students, alumni, and members of the public.

This is a proud moment for our Group as we continue to support education, strengthen agriculture, and drive sustainable development across Nigeria.

How Noiler Farming Changed My Life: Mrs. Motunrayo Agbaje’s Inspiring Journey https://afshltd.com/how-noiler-farming-changed-my-life-mrs-motunrayo-agbajes-inspiring-journey/ https://afshltd.com/how-noiler-farming-changed-my-life-mrs-motunrayo-agbajes-inspiring-journey/#respond Fri, 08 Aug 2025 11:04:33 +0000 https://afshltd.com/?p=4147 For Mrs. Motunrayo Agbaje, a resilient single mother, life took a remarkable turn when she discovered Noiler farming. What started as a small step toward extra income became her pathway to stability, independence, and hope.

From Financial Struggle to Stability

Before raising Noiler birds, Mrs. Agbaje often faced financial uncertainty. Bills piled up, and borrowing money seemed like the only option. That changed when she embraced the Mother Unit Farmer model — a system where farmers raise Noiler chicks from day-old to about five weeks before selling them.

With each cycle, she earned consistent income, covered her expenses, and completely stopped taking loans. “I no longer borrow to survive. Now, I pay my bills with ease,” she proudly shares.

Why Noiler Birds Are Different

Noiler birds are more than just chickens — they are a proven solution for sustainable poultry farming in Nigeria. They are:

  • Hardy and Resilient – Thrive in diverse environments and resist common poultry diseases.
  • Low Maintenance – Require less feed and management compared to other breeds.
  • Dual-purpose – Provide both high-quality meat and nutritious eggs for home consumption and sale.

For Mrs. Agbaje, this meant lower farming risks, steady returns, and a sustainable source of livelihood.

A Movement for Empowerment

By joining the Noiler community, Mrs. Agbaje became part of a wider mission — promoting sustainable agriculture, women’s empowerment, and improved livelihoods for smallholder farmers across Nigeria.

Noiler farming is more than just raising poultry. It’s about achieving food security, creating income stability, and building a brighter future for rural families.
